Matatu [Uganda]

Can you see our bags?

Our last full day in Uganda and we didn’t leave without a parting gift. Yes Ugandan gave us something in the form of her beautiful public transport system. The picture in this post is of a Ugandan Taxi, a 14 passenger van turned people mover. When you are in the city they are great to get from one place to another, but when you are on a 9 hour journey I advise against it. On the side of the door it is clearly marked that this van or “taxi” is to carry 14 people and 14 people only. But remember this is Africa and they don’t quite follow the rules. At one point we had 23 people in our taxi, but the conductor felt that wasn’t enough so we added more. By the time we reached Kampala we were 26 strong.

As for luggage? Reference the picture above.

We won’t miss the public transportation of Uganda, but I am not quite sure we will enjoy it any better in India.

26! How did the wheels not blow out? I guess the average person is pretty thin there?
