Backwaters [Kerala, India]

With a crisp 500 rupee bill in your pocket you can accomplish just about anything you want to in the south of India. So when we went to rent our houseboat for the night and found it priced at 4,750 rupees we almost bulked at the price. It wasn’t the private chef and captain nor was it the beautiful rice barged converted luxurious home that sold us. This trip was going to be our one chance to escape the honking horns, crowded streets and 48 hour train rides of India.

Looking back, it would have been ridiculous not to take the opportunity to float the backwaters of Kerala. 4,750 rupees converts into $103.00 and that crisp 500 rupee bill just 10 bucks.

We parted without our rupees hoping that we had made the right decision Not too shabbyand set off for the backwaters. The next 24 hours were perfect…our food was thoughtfully prepared and abundant, the room had AC and the second level of the boat provided the perfect view. As we drifted through what to the locals are neighborhood streets we saw women washing (beating) their clothes in the river, elementary students picked up from school by canoes and the simplicity of which they lived their lives.

The backwater trip will rank up there in the top 5 things we have done on this trip and would go on my list of 100 things to do before you die.
