Christmas in Africa

December 16, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

It is December 16, 2009 – 9 days before Christmas yet it feels nothing like Christmas. You won’t find Christmas trees displayed prominently in the front window nor will you see colored lights hung from roof tops. Nope – this is Christmas in Africa. Maybe celebrated the way it was intended to be?

Amy and I have decided to escape village life in order to head to the madness of Kampala. Although Kampala is a 6 if not 10 hour, miserable drive from Nyamarwa the city of 10 million people is frequented a few times a month. Whether passing through on our way to Mbale, dropping Mel off or heading in for a quick get-a-way Kampala has provided a break from the slow pace of life…and food.

An interesting place, Kampala – in some areas you have village meets metro while in other parts you feel as if you are in a developing western city. None the less this is where we will celebrate Christmas. We will take in a movie, eat Thai, Java and Pizza, and maybe even experience some African theatre.

This will be the second time Amy and I will celebrate Christmas just the two of us, the last in 2006 when we were living in Dublin. We will miss our families dearly, our nephews Ashton and Jax as one celebrates his 3rd Christmas and the other his first. We will miss the turkey dinner, giving gifts and just being with family, but it will still be Christmas and it will be great. We will celebrate the birth of our savoir Jesus Christ and take time to thank God for the blessings and experiences we have had on this trip. The two of us have learned a lot in the short 3 months we have been gone. By the end of this journey we will have a year of life experiences, lessons and who knows what else. The best part is that we get to do it together, just the two of us…kind of like Christmas 2009.
