Mopeds and Fairy Chimneys

ScooterSince leaving Istanbul and arriving in Cappadocia we have been more then pleased. We are staying in a small backpackers town of Goreme. Don’t flinch when you hear “backpackers town” as Goreme is described as a magical village amid towering fairy chimneys and majestic , honeycomb cliffs. The perfect 3 day hide away from Ankara that we were looking for.

Today, day 14, Amy and I decided to splurge a bit and rent a scooter rather than taking the bus to each destination. To say it was a bitMustafa and Amy chilly would be an understatement. Even though it was a balmy 72 degrees rolling 60 mph down the “highway” it got a little cold. Hands numb, snot running we stopped into a petrol station to browse the candy rows. No intentions on buying anything a young man invited us to sit down for a cup of tea. So we did. With his broken English and our nonexistent Turkish, surprisingly the conversation was good.  We can’t explain in words the friendliness and hospitality that we have found in Turkey. My perception of this country has done a complete 180 from where it was before we even stepped foot on their soil. Foolish.

For the ancient underground cities, chimney peaks that were formed 10,000 years ago and the fact that the Cappadocians built their homes in caves…this place is pretty cool.
